Rosa Mendes involved in car accident in Las Vegas Friday night

Rosa Mendes' car following an accident in Las Vegas

UPDATED: Saturday, 9:30 a.m. ET

WWE Diva Rosa Mendes was in a car accident in Las Vegas early Friday evening. Released from the hospital late Friday night, Rosa suffered serious whiplash but no other major injuries were reported. (EXCLUSIVE PHOTOS FROM THE ACCIDENT SCENE)

An accident involving at least five cars occurred at approximately 6:45 p.m. after a Mercedes in a turning lane reportedly switched lanes, causing a truck to jackknife and a series of successive collisions.

A passenger in her friend?s black Hummer, Rosa and the driver were stopped at a light when they were struck from behind by a car that was also hit and moving at high speed.

“We were talking when all of a sudden, I saw in my rear view mirror a truck coming really fast. It jackknifed,” Rosa told WWE.com early Saturday morning.

“We were the last car hit, so we had the most impact,” she said. “We slid two car lengths. I didn?t know when it was going to stop. If we weren?t in the Hummer, we would?ve been seriously injured.”

Rosa was wearing her seatbelt but the impact of the collision forced her to the floor of the automobile as she blocked her head from hitting the dashboard.

The car that struck Rosa Mendes' vehicle in Las Vegas“My neck and back were really hurting,” Rosa said. “My body is my job. I was so scared that I was not going to be able to wrestle. I was in a lot of pain.”

Rosa was immediately taken to the hospital for evaluation and released a few hours after the accident. She was instructed to rest and recover. A follow-up examination is expected with WWE physician Dr. Chris Amann.

“Nothing?s broken,” she said. “I feel like I can wrestle but the whole right side of my neck and back have a burning sensation.”

Though still very shaken from the incident, the WWE Diva offered an optimistic message to concerned WWE fans.

“I want [the WWE Universe] to know that I’m OK and I’m alive,” Rosa said. “I’m grateful to be here because it was really, really scary.”

Check back with WWE.com for updates on Rosa’s condition.

Two highly evolved Sony cameras vie for your $600

On May 19, 2012, in alluring, by

17 hrs.

There’s a lot of competition in the enthusiast camera sector, with dozens of great cameras competing for attention in the $500-$1000 range. Sony’s latest interchangeable-lens cameras, the compact NEX-F3 and SLR-style A37, even compete against each other with an array of?useful features, some inherited from Sony’s?more expensive models. They’re both solid picks, but which would be better for you?

The 16-megapixel NEX-F3 is an upgrade to the least expensive NEX series camera, the NEX-3. It adds a better sensor and image processor, a built-in flash, and a handy flipping screen for self-shots. It does 1080p video, and now shares the “Clear Image Zoom” enhanced digital zoom and automatic portrait framing found on the A57.

I got a chance to take the NEX-F3 for a spin on a sunny day, and found it to be an eminently usable camera. The flipping LCD?thoughtfully?mirrors the image for easy composition of self-shots. The body is larger and better-designed than its predecessor and feels more like a real camera than before. Adjusting settings manually wasn’t a simple task, however, so whoever’s shooting should be comfortable with letting the camera’s intelligent auto modes do their thing, be it multiple exposures or bumping the ISO instead of lowering the shutter speed.

The A37, also 16 megapixels, looks like an SLR ? but unlike that type of camera, the mirror element inside?doesn’t flip up during exposure, it’s merely translucent, allowing light to pass through onto the sensor and to bounce up to the eyepiece for you to see. One of the benefits is highly improved autofocus performance, especially when shooting video: keeping subjects in focus during videos is critical, of course, especially in action shots, and the Alpha series excels at it.

The camera itself is a mix of upgrades and downgrades from the?earlier?A33 model. The A37′s screen isn’t as nice, and now it can’t shoot 60p, but it gains a better electronic viewfinder, some new shooting modes, a better body, and stereo mics. It also sells for $150 less, making it more of a budget option than it was before.

Both the NEX-F3 and A37 will be available in June with an 18-55mm kit zoom for “about $600.” Is one the better buy? The NEX-F3 is ?more compact, but with a zoom lens on there you really don’t end up saving that?much space. The A37 is a bit more capable and is quite compact for a DSLR-style camera. If you don’t really need that rotating LCD, or you plan on doing much video, you’ll probably get more for your money with?the A37.

Manhunt for groom charged in Ill. bride’s slaying

On May 19, 2012, in alluring, by

CHICAGO (AP) ? Police and FBI officials were poring over more than 100 tips as they hunted for a man accused of stabbing his new wife to death and leaving her body in her bathtub, still clad in the silver sequined cocktail dress she wore to celebrate their wedding.

More than 30 law enforcement agencies had joined federal agents in the manhunt for Arnoldo Jimenez, who secretly married Estrella Carrera on Friday night at Chicago City Hall and allegedly killed her just hours later. Police would not say in which states they were looking for him, but that it was “all over the country.”

“We are following every lead no matter where it takes us,” said Capt. Joseph Ford of the Burbank Police Department, outside Chicago. “We will not stop looking, and this will not go away.”

Authorities began looking for Jimenez soon after Carrera’s family reported that she failed to pick up her two children Saturday as she had arranged. The family had been unable to reach Carrera or Jimenez, so they asked police to check on her well-being at her apartment in the suburb of Burbank.

That’s when Carrera’s body was found in the bathtub, still clothed in the dress she also may have worn at her wedding ceremony.

Hours later, the bride’s family received a haunting phone call from a relative of her new husband. Jimenez’ sister told them he had called her and tearfully said he had left his bride bleeding after a “bad fight,” Carrera’s sister told The Associated Press on Wednesday.

Jimenez was charged with first-degree murder, leaving the bride’s family searching for answers as to what befell the 26-year-old mother of two in the hours after she secretly married her on-and-off boyfriend.

Most of Carrera’s family disapproved of her relationship with Jimenez, even though he was the father of her 2-year-old son.

Jimenez had hit and bruised Carrera in the past, an older sister, Jazmin Carrera, told the AP. Police also said family members reported incidents of violence while the couple was dating.

Jazmin Carrera described 6-foot, 220-pound Jimenez as “very possessive” and jealous. She said she doesn’t understand why her sister married the 30-year-old Jimenez in what seemed like a rushed ceremony ? or why she married him at all.

“That’s the question everyone’s asking themselves,” Jazmin Carrera said.

She received a text message from her sister Friday, inviting her to join them and their friends at a Mexican restaurant and a nightclub to celebrate the nuptials. She didn’t join the festivities.

“It was just all of a sudden,” Jazmin Carrera said. “She didn’t give us enough notice.”

On Sunday, relatives heard from a sister of Jimenez that he had called that day, Jazmin Carrera told the AP.

“She said that he was crying and he was really nervous,” she said. “He said they had a really bad fight and he had left her bleeding.”

Jimenez hung up on his sister and wouldn’t pick up when she called him back, Carrera said.

Police in Burbank said they are aware of the account and are looking into it.

Police are pleading with Jimenez to turn himself in “for the sake of his family and especially his children,” Ford said. “I am sure they are very concerned for his well-being.”

Ford said Jimenez was previously arrested for domestic violence in another city in a case that did not involve Carrera. Police don’t know what Jimenez does for a living, although he was last known to be driving a black 2006 Maserati, an expensive car.

“We do not believe Jimenez is a danger to others, but we certainly do not know his mind frame at the present time,” Ford told the AP.

Since the killing likely took place mere hours after the couple went to Carrera’s apartment, the suspect had a day to flee the metropolitan area or even the state, Ford said.

The victim’s sister said she is taking things “a day at a time.”

“The emotions are just on and off,” Jazmin Carrera said. “It’s unbelievable one minute, and then it hits you and becomes real.”

From the Front Line of Domestic Violence: Hope House Blog: The …

On May 18, 2012, in alluring, by

I have spent some time blogging about common myths about domestic violence. ?Here?s the one that is the most frustrating for me to explain and dispel:

“Victims like the abuse, otherwise they would leave.”

To me, it?s obvious that women do not like to be abused. They do not enjoy being beaten, called horrible names, and having no control over their lives.?

They do leave.? They do try to end the relationship.?Women leave abusive relationships every day. But when they leave, they face many obstacles and challenges, like continued abuse and stalking by their partner.

Last year I shared with you the story of Katie Piper. She broke things off with her boyfriend. He stalked her for days, and then hired someone to attack her with acid.?
It happens a lot: women leave, and then they are stalked and killed. ?We have already had more than one domestic violence homicide this year in KC where women were in the process of leaving their abusers. It?s scary to realize that we?re still in the first half of the year.

Rather than asking ?Why does she stay?? let?s start focusing on the abuser and his motivations for staying in the relationship. Ask yourself why a man would want to stay in a relationship when he thinks:

  • She never does anything right. I’ll have to teach her a lesson.?
  • She?s always cheating on me. I saw the way she looked at the cashier at the grocery store.
  • I just can?t trust her, so I?ll have to put a GPS on her car so I know where she is.

Changing which side of the relationship you?re looking at changes everything, doesn?t it?

Victims of domestic violence do not ask for the abuse. They do not deserve the abuse, and they certainly do not enjoy it. It is a vicious cycle and one that must be stopped. Two of the first steps to ending it are education and availability of services. We are working on addressing both of those issues.

Romney, GOP try to shift focus to deficit

On May 17, 2012, in alluring, by

Obama, Romney exchange jabs on economy

STORY HIGHLIGHTS

  • NEW: Romney: “The issue is who is going to do what it takes to put out the fire”
  • Romney targets Obama over the $787 billion stimulus package he signed in 2009
  • Republicans believe they can win Iowa, which voted for Obama in 2008
  • An Obama ad hits Romney over his corporate business background

(CNN) — Mitt Romney continued his blitz against President Barack Obama over the federal deficit on Tuesday, signaling a GOP shift away from social issues and back to what Republicans consider the president’s Achilles’ heel: the economy.

The presumptive GOP presidential nominee gave a speech on government spending in the battleground state of Iowa, the same day as House Speaker John Boehner cautioned of another battle brewing in Congress over the national debt ceiling.

Romney targeted the president over the $787 billion stimulus package Obama signed soon after taking office in 2009, a move Romney described as the “most careless one-time expenditure by the federal government in history.”

“We still owe the money, we’re still paying interest on it, and it’ll be that way long after this presidency ends in January,” he said.

Romney’s trip marks his first time back to Iowa since the Republican caucuses in early January, when he finished a close second to rival Rick Santorum. In terms of the economy, the state fares better than others. Its unemployment level sits at 5.2% compared to the national average of 8.2%.

While Obama carried Iowa in 2008 with 54% of the vote, the state is widely expected to be in play this fall after Republicans picked up the governor’s seat and the state house in the 2010 elections.

Ron Paul supporters have a plan

Romney, however, emphasized the more than $5 trillion increase in the debt since Obama took office in 2009, and took a shot at Republicans for contributing to the problem, as well.

“A prairie fire of debt is sweeping across Iowa and our nation and every day we fail to act we feed that fire with our own lack of resolve,” he said in his speech, delivered at a hotel in Des Moines.

“This is not solely a Democratic or Republican problem. This issue here isn’t who deserves the most blame. The issue is who is going to do what it takes to put out the fire.”

After the speech, Team Obama quickly fired off on their likely opponent’s remarks. In a statement, the campaign insisted Romney has no specific plan of his own to combat the deficit.

“Mitt Romney simply wants to return to the same policies that caused the crisis and weakened the middle class: budget-busting tax cuts for the wealthiest Americans and letting Wall Street write its own rules. Loading the country up with debt while giving tax breaks to the wealthy — America can’t afford Romney Economics,” said campaign spokeswoman Lis Smith.

JP Morgan makes Wall Street regulation a campaign issue

Ahead of his speech, Romney’s campaign released a new web video called “23 million.” The nearly four-minute spot features three unemployed Iowans discussing their struggles as they look for work.

The Bureau of Labor Statistics estimated in its April jobs report that 12.5 million Americans were unemployed. When factoring in those who were underemployed or who had dropped out of the workforce, the number increased to 23 million.

On the other side, a super PAC supporting Obama’s re-election released a dueling television ad Tuesday morning, hitting Romney over his corporate business background as the founder of a private equity firm.

The ad shows laid-off workers from one of the companies that went bankrupt eight years after it was purchased by Bain Capital.

“He promised us the same things he’s promising the United States,” one of the former workers says in the ad. “He’ll give you the same thing he gave us: nothing. He’ll take it all.”

Meanwhile, Boehner called to mind last year’s near-shutdowns of the government Tuesday when he promised to hold firm on large spending cuts before approving a hike in the debt ceiling at the end of the year.

“When the time comes, I will again insist on my simple principle of cuts and reforms greater than the debt limit increase. This is the only avenue I see right now to force the elected leadership of this country to solve our structural fiscal imbalance,” Boehner said at the Peter G. Peterson Foundation’s 2012 Fiscal Summit.

He also singled out the president, accusing Obama of prioritizing political gain above policy.

“If the president continues to put politics before principle — or party before country, as he often accuses others of doing — our economy is going to suffer and we’ll miss our last chance to solve this crisis on our own terms,” he said.

Last year, Boehner released a similar caution, just months before Congress and the White House engaged in a bitter showdown over a deficit-reduction agreement. Racing against the clock to avoid a government default, the two parties ultimately reached a deal to extend the debt ceiling in exchange for $2.1 trillion in spending cuts.

Soon after the battle, however, Standard & Poor’s issued its first-ever downgrade of the U.S. credit rating, pointing to Washington partisanship as its reason.

Boehner’s words Tuesday foreshadow what could be a highly charged political clash at the end of the year, as lawmakers face a host of decisions involving the debt ceiling, tax extensions and spending cuts, all with a deadline set for January 1.

And he’s not the only one expecting the debt to re-emerge as a big issue this year.

Former President Bill Clinton said at the same fiscal summit Tuesday that “this budget issue should become front and center in this election.”

He warned that if leaders don’t reach a budget deal before the economy starts growing, Americans will regret it. “If we don’t deal with it, we will sooner or later … have growth come back here and interest rates will go up so fast you won’t be able to catch your breath. And then everybody will say, ‘Why didn’t we do this earlier?’”

Boehner’s comments on the debt quickly sparked an strong response from top Democrats.

Rep. Steny Hoyer, the House minority whip and the chamber’s No. 2 Democrat, said Boehner offered a “simplistic characterization” of the issue at hand.

“We are buying more than we’re paying for,” Hoyer said to reporters on Capitol Hill. “The Republicans are good at buying and lousy at paying. They borrowed a lot of money. As a result we owe a lot of money. The debt limit is about paying back that which we have already incurred.”

Meanwhile, House Minority Leader Nancy Pelosi issued a statement accusing Boehner of making “partisan demands” and charging the GOP with “once again choosing millionaires over the middle class.”

“Speaker Boehner is threatening to take our nation into another manufactured crisis that will harm America’s families,” she said.

Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid also weighed in on Boehner’s remarks, arguing that along with spending cuts, tax increases will be needed to help balance the deficit.

“There is simply no way to address the challenges facing us in a way that will support our economic recovery without using both sides of the ledger. So, of course, that means some revenues,” Reid said to reporters. “The American people agree with this.”

CNN’s Kate Bolduan, Jeanne Sahadi, Kevin Liptak and Gregory Wallace contributed to this report.
